Love, Hate and Propaganda

prop·a·gan·da [prop-uh-gan-duh]
- noun
1 The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause.
2 Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Starting tomorrow night (March 4), be sure to check out the six-part CBC documentary
Love, Hate and Propaganda,
narrated by The Hour's George Stroumboulopoulos.
Check out the series promo .
From the documentary's website:
"Love, Hate and Propaganda...will bring the most important war (WW II) in history into sharp focus through the lens of propaganda. This was the first modern war in which all combatants bombarded their citizens with messages: through newsreels and posters, radio addresses and songs, speeches and rallies. The great - and the evil - minds of that era knew propaganda could awaken powerful passions: love, devotion, anger, and hatred. They employed truth, half-truths and sometimes outright lies, used powerful symbols and persuasive words to sway entire populations. Today's viewers, familiar with every kind of messaging, will discover how war was sold around the world by these early practitioners of mass propaganda. Every movie house, school, newspaper and radio became a forum for persuasion and manipulation."

If you are creative secondary or post-secondary school student, there is a contest associated with the doccumentary! Pick a cause you strongly believe in and create either a poster or video to support it...generate your own propaganda! Click here for more information.

Coming this Fall to the CBC...

Yesterday the CBC announced its fall-winter line up yesterday, and we are happy to announce that The Hour is among the shows returning to the CBC next fall. This will be The Hour's sixth season on the CBC.

Other shows returning to CBC this fall include: The Mercer Report, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, The Tudors, The Border, Little Mosque on the Prairie, Dragon's Den, Heartland, Coronation Street and last season's breakout hit Being Erica. Four of these seires (Little Mosque, Being Erica, 22 Minutes and The Border) will return with shorter seasons.

The CBC also announced three new shows that will premiere in the fall:

The Ron James Show, which is set up as a showcase of the famous comedians observational humour.

Super Speller: a spelling competition hosted by CBC personality Evan Solomon.

Battle of the Blades: which teams up Canadian figure skaters with Canadian hockey players in an elimination style contest.

Two more shows will debut in the winter:

18 to Life: a comedy about a couple who marries at 18.

The Republic of Doyle: a dramatic comedy following a dysfunctional father-son private investigator team set in St. John's.

Show that are not returning to the CBC in the fall season include Wild Roses, Sophie, Fashion File and The Steven and Chris Show, which is currently on indefinite hiatus. CBC also reports that there are no plans for a third edition of The Week the Women Went or new editions of Test the Nation.
The CBC says that its summer schedule will not be change at this point and that further announcements are coming.
We want to hear from you! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think about the new season...

The CBC

If you have ever attended a taping of The Hour, then you have likely heard George Stroumboulopoulos prompt bashful audience members, in his own unique way, to ask questions by commenting "you're paying for this s**t". As taxpayers, we do indeed fund our public broadcaster. Yesterday a story on the CBC's website noted that the broadcaster receives approximately $33 annually per taxpayer. From my perspective, I am getting a great return for my investment. However, there are some people who would disagree. It's hard to please all of the people all of the time.

Equally hard is facing the reality of the current economic climate. Our public broadcaster is not immune to a problem many Canadians currently face: simply not being able to make ends meet. Reports over the last few days suggest that the CBC is facing a massive budget shortfall as a direct result of reduced advertising revenue, combined with increased operating costs.

In reading about the CBC's woes, one thing that has been glaring to me, is the contrary comments of our Federal Heritage Minister James Moore. In one statement, Moore says "I don't like it when I see the CBC cancelling Canadian content, and we see Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune". In another he points out that he feels that the CBC should have to work out it's own problems like broadcasters in the private sector, remarking that it is not for him "to tell the CBC how to run itself". I'm confused Mr. Minister, which is it?

The fact is that the advertising revenue generated by hugely popular US-origin shows such as Jeopardy! (hosted by a Canadian Alex Trebek) can help subsidize the homegrown efforts. Producing relevent and fresh Canadian content costs money. The government holds on tight to the purse strings and has for well over a decade. Few taxpayers would be willing to see that annual $33 substantially increase. In a recent Harris-Decima poll overall "a bare majority believe the government should provide bridge funding to the CBC". This issue is indeed complex and coming up with a solution will not be easy.

So, what do think?

Should the government extend additional funding to help the
CBC through the current financial crisis?

Is it wrong for Canada's public broadcaster to generate advertising
revenue using some US programming?

If the CBC has to make programming cuts, what should go? What should stay?

John Bul Dau survived what could only be considered Hell on earth. At thirteen he became one of the thousands of "Lost Boys of Sudan", who fled their homeland when troops were sent in to kill all black Christian males. He survived the pursuit of armed soldiers, crocodiles, dehydration, starvation and disease, all while aiding younger boys in the escape. After arriving in the US and completing his education, he now heads the John Dau Sudan Foundation, on a mission to develop and sustain health clinics in southern Sudan.

When you think of ThighMaster, what is the first thing that comes to mind? For some it would undoubtedly be excruciating pain. For others, it may be the very successful entreprenuer Suzanne Somers. While many will remember her four year stint as "Chrissy Snow" on Three's Company, for the past several years, Somers has built a huge community of followers (known as "Somersizers") who have a shared interest in her various wellness, beauty, jewellery and houseware products. Last month, this breast cancer survivor released her latest book, Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness.

Tuesday, October 21st

This day marks the kick-off of a very special initiative between the CBC, The Hour and Cisco, among others. One Million Acts of Green..."a massive, nationwide environmental movement with the goal of changing how we live and how we treat the planet, one act at a time. It’s not about overhauling your life; it’s doing one single acts."

Long-time friend of the earth, David Suzuki will be stopping by...

...as will Canadian music icon Alanis Morrisette...

...and THIS guy...Oscar the Grouch! I can hardly wait :-)

Wednesday, October 22nd

In keeping the GREEN theme, Canada's favourite handyman, Mike Holmes, will be paying another visit to The Hour. This visit Mike will be offering tips to make your home more green.

Thursday, October 23rd

To quote Bob Dylan, "the times they are a-changin'"...as we are all too aware by watching the the downward spiral of the world's economy on the nightly news. If you have not already made a plan for your financial future, then Phil Town may be able to help. Billed as "not your typical Wall Street guy", this former Green Beret Vietnam vet, Harley riding, river guide turned a borrowed one thousand dollars into one million in five years. In 2007 he published his secret in the best-selling book, Rule #1: The Simple Strategy for Successful Investing in Only 15 Minutes a Week!

John Stephens' grandmother began teaching him gospel piano at the age of three. A few years later he was singing in the church choir. As an adult, John Legend has made his grandma proud. Not just for his achievements in the music industry as a multi-award winning soul singer and songwriter, but also for his philanthropic work to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina and AIDS sufferers in Africa. Legend contributed his talent to the moving Yes We Can and performed at the Democratic National Convention. His new CD, Evolver, hits stores at the end of this month.

Hockey Themes

This editorial cartoon appeared in the Globe and Mail on Saturday the 7th 0f June
Because it has George Stroumboulopoulos in it, we decided to talk about the HNIC theme drama.
I don't have any comments about the cartoon itself except to say I have heard George play piano
but never heard him play the pits before.

Na na Na na Na naaaa!
----------------------------
I thought hockey season was over when the Habs were out of the series. For me there was no need to focus on it until next season right? Wrong, because there was hockey contest happenings at The Hour to get you in box seats with George at a Leafs game (won by Stephanie Page of QC, Congrats to Stephanie and if you need a fourth person I am not doing anything that night) Also there was another hockey contest being announced by the CBC. A contest for composers to create a new Hockey Night in Canada theme song.
Lots of drama that involve music, money, and lack there of, sports, national pride and egos.

The story changes every day. Wikipedia seems to have it covered best though.

The theme was written in 1968 by Dolores Claman, the composer that laid a golden egg by creating the Hockey Night in Canada Theme music. Good for her. It's a very stirring piece that evokes a lot of emotions for hockey fanatics and hockey casuals alike. No question it stirs excitement and pride in the hearts of many Canadians and may make some Canadians thirsty for beer...

I like to peruse the non traditional news sources like insidethecbc for their take on the growing story. On the 5th of June they reported HNIC Theme use still being negotiated
On June 6 th they reported that It's Done: Hockey night in Canada theme is gone.
On June 9th it was being renegotiated and then the same day CTV just comes out like a sugar daddy and offers the musician what she wants. A ton of money honey. What was it 2.5 to 3 Million ? Yeah thanks CTV ! You saved it for all Canadians (that have cable and get TSN). Now each time I hear the theme I will remember what it cost, and what CBC lost. To me it feels a bit tainted now. But to be honest I don't know how I will feel hearing the new theme brought about by a music contest.

You can let us know what you think of this musical drama or you can let the CBC or CTV know your views.

Now back to hockey The Hour style... no HNIC theme needed.

Doors Open Toronto ~ The CBC Broadcasting Centre

If you happen to be in the Toronto area, you may wish to check out the very awesome Doors Open Toronto event taking place this weekend (May 24 & 25). If you are not familiar with this event, bascially it is an opportunity for the public to visit 150 buildings that are of architectural, historical or cultural relevance to the City of Toronto. One of the reasons that I love this event is that visitors can access buildings that are typically not open to the public. Admission to all buildings is free.

As in previous years, one of the buildings available for viewing will be the home of The Hour, the CBC Broadcasting Centre. Event details indicate that the sets of both The Hour and Steven and Chris will be available for tour. So if you have never been able to make it to a taping, here is your opportunity to at least check out the studio and other behind-the-scenes goodies.
